Year 1 and 2 Reading Scheme
In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, reading books are organised by colour book bands which correspond to a National Curriculum level. The children choose independent reading books and in Key Stage 1 the children have home reading books according to their given colour band whilst in Key Stage 2 children are encouraged to take a book home that is of interest to them from their classroom, topic area or library to be shared with someone at home. Within each year group, Children read in groups for guided reading which match their book banded levels.
Read, Write, Inc.
At Brougham Primary School children across EYFS, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two take part in the Read, Write Inc. synthetic phonics programme written by Ruth Miskin. Read Write Inc is a lively and systematic method of teaching synthetic phonics. Children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to sound-blend words for reading (decoding) at the same time as developing handwriting skills and spelling (encoding). The children read and write each day, and enjoy reading story books and non-fiction books matched to their level of reading. This programme begins in the Foundation Stage and once your child is reading at a level 2a they will have completed the programme. Speed Sound Pronunciation video
